Virtual Field Trips
(VFT)

Virtual Field Trips (VFT) - we are referring to the use of videoconferencing technology, such as a Polycom unit, to relay discussion between a group of students and a remote site.

Very basically, it will involve a person(s) at a remote site talking/demonstrating to a group of students at another site and the students can ask and answer questions because it is in real time. It could be a precursor to an actual on site field trip or in place of the students physically going on a field trip.

This will be a little confusing at first, and details will be refined on an ongoing basis.

The School Library System has a goal to help keep participants aware of technology.  So we purchased four Polycom units for loaning out to schools for Virtual Field Trips.  Virtual Field Trips cost money, so it was written into our budget that each school library could have one free VFT this year.

To have a VFT, you have to find a site you would like to use, fill in and print out the online form, give it to whoever authorizes similar forms in your district, they will sign it and send it to the Media Services/SLS office and we will schedule you.  Details will be refined as time goes on.  BOCES Media Service is offering it as a co-ser your district pays for, so please write on your form that this is your free VFT from the SLS.  Also, the sites want at least two weeks lead time, so try to submit your VFT online request form a month in advance.

Generally, you can do one class on a VFT, as they have size limits and generally run for about 45 minutes.  The SLS is only offering one free VFT per library, so if you have five classes you want to offer this to, only one is for free.
